Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings became a famous writer because she had the good sense to meet people at the crossroads of their cultures, without judgement. She was an independent woman who might join with the men on a late night frog hunt in the swamp, shoot a pig for digging up her petunias, or create an intricate recipe for famous Hollywood dinner guests, such as Gregory Peck.
With her friend Bessie Smith Prescott, she once took a rugged ten-day trip on the Saint John’s River, something few women of her time would tackle. She desired to fit into the surrounding environment, and it brought her personal satisfaction. However, she also suffered financial and emotional angst. Her first husband, Charles Rawlings, was also a writer. He did not share her intense love for “the Creek,” as Marjorie referred to the area in some of her books. It was Marjorie who insisted they purchase the farm, which included a neglected orange grove. In 1928, the town of Cross Creek became the couple’s home.
M.K. Rawlings wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning book
In wild desolate surroundings, the intelligent, determined, and sometimes stubborn Marjorie typed out the stories that would make her famous."The Yearling," a Pulitzer Prize winner, came out in 1938. It was a heart-wrenching story of a young boy, Jody, who felt the isolation imposed upon him as an only child on a farm surrounded by swamps and forest. His parents dealt with constant toil, unforgiving weather, and a lack of cash; a meager existence that occasionally meant clashing with the outside world.
